The Hotel
Let me just say this up front â we loved this hotel!
The Loews Coronado Bay Resort is the perfect escape for families who love luxury hotels but not the stuffiness that often goes with them. We found the friendly staff all helpful and eager to assist. The resort is beautiful and upscale, but casual enough to walk through the lobby in a swimsuit.
And speaking of the lobby. Framed by a grand staircase, San Diegoâs sparkling bay is the first thing youâll see when you enter the main building. You can step out onto the terrace to enjoy the view, or snuggle up by the firepits during the evening hours.
Since the hotel is located on a private 15-acre peninsula and has a gated entrance, it feels exclusive and private. The resort grounds are clean and beautifully kept, with towering palm trees and boats bobbing in the private marina.
And while Loews is not a beach hotel in the most literal sense of the word, it is just a short walk away from one of the best beaches in San Diego. In fact, I dare say when you stay at this hotel you get the best of both worlds â a full-service resort marina and views of San Diego Bay, and easy access to Silver Strand State Beach.
Guest Rooms
Loews Coronado Bay Resort is home to 440 rooms and 40 suites, spread throughout five three-story buildings.
We stayed in a Coronado Sunset Suite, which lived up to its name providing spectacular views of the sunset. Located on the top floor, our room faced west and offered a panoramic view of the sun dipping into the Pacific Ocean each evening. It was a highlight of our stay being able to watch from our balcony.
Inside, our suite had a bedroom with a king-size bed, a living room with a pull-out sofa, and a large bathroom with separate shower and tub. Suites have two 55-inch flat-screen TVs – one in the bedroom and one in the living room – and there is a fridge and coffee maker in the bedroom. It was really nice being able to spread out. And since I work when I travel, having a suite provided enough space for everyone to do their own thing.
No matter which room type you choose, all guest rooms are decorated with light and beachy tones, with very comfortable beds and furnished private balconies.
There were plenty of outlets and ports to charge your devices, and complimentary Wi-Fi is provided throughout rooms and public spaces.
One thing I really liked about the resortâs layout is the parking garage is located under the buildings, so there are no sprawling parking lots coming between your room and the waterâs edge. This makes for some amazing views no matter where on the property your room is located.
Loews Coronado Bay Resort Amenities
This resort is all about fun and relaxation. From a great pool area to full-service marina, the array of activities available for families to enjoy is seemingly endless.
Letâs start with the three heated pools â one of which is reserved for adults only along with a hot tub â for plenty of time in the sun. There are plenty of lounge chairs and lawn games on deck, and food and bar service so you never have to wander far. Kids will love the big family pool.
One of the sophisticated touches youâll find at this resort is their Pool Concierge. Borrow towels, make special requests, even slather up with complimentary sunscreen.
Other hotel amenities include a fitness center, pickle ball courts, a giant chess board, table tennis, and cycling. If you want to enjoy a family game night, stop by the front desk to borrow board games. They also have a library of childrenâs books your kids can take borrow to read.
Water Sports
The resort’s onsite marina, Action Sports Rentals, rents powerboats, sailboats, Duffy boats, jet skis, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and bikes.
We rented a powerboat and had a blast zooming through the bay. A one-hour rental is enough time to drive to the Coronado Bridge and circle back, but you can go for longer if you like. It is the perfect way to spend an afternoon enjoying San Diegoâs perfect weather.
The staff at Action Sports were all super friendly and accommodating. They are technically a separate entity from Loews, but the process is seamless and you’ll be able to charge rentals to your room.
Silver Strand State Beach
If youâre craving some beach time, ocean waves are just a ten minute walk away. Loews has a walkway that goes under the main road, safely leading you to a beautiful stretch of surf and sand.
And if you donât want to walk, one of the amenities Loews offers is its beach shuttle service via a golf cart.
The hotel also provides beach umbrellas, towels, and chairs to help you enjoy a great beach day. Surf lessons are also available at an additional cost.
Loews Little Legends Program
This is a fun one!
When you check into Loews Coronado Bay Resort with kids, youâll receive a passport listing a series of unique activities that are fun for the whole family. Collect stamps as you complete each one and receive a special prize when you turn it in to the front desk.
It’s like a fun scavenger hunt that lets you explore the resort and discover fun things to do during your stay.
Resort Amenities Fee
Like most luxury hotels, Loews Coronado Bay Resort has a mandatory resort fee. The daily resort fee is $39 per room, but it includes lots of perks:
- Welcome beverage upon arrival
- In-room bottled water
- 24-hour Fitness Center and Studio Access
- Daily group fitness classes
- Use of eight pickleball courts available seasonally
- Shuttle service to Downtown Coronado Village
- Shuttle service to Silver Strand State Beach
- Use of beach toys, chairs, and umbrellas
Dining Options at Loews
Loews Coronado Bay Resort has three full-service restaurants, each with its own distinctive vibe. We tried all three, plus enjoyed a few stops into the resortâs coffee bar, Silver Strand Exchange.
Crown Landing
Crown Landing is the hotelâs signature restaurant, open for breakfast and dinner. The first time we visited the resort many years ago, this space was called the Market CafĂ©, and it maintains its beachy cafĂ© feel, though the menu is now more upscale. The restaurant is decorated with blue and white nautical tones and lots of wood, with large windows that offer views of the marina and outdoor dining patio.
We enjoyed dinner at Crown Landing one night and had a wonderful salmon dish and the tuna tartare â sambal aioli, tobiko, sesame seed, and crisp wontons. The food was all very fresh and beautifully plated. Other popular menu items include short ribs, steak frites, a variety of handcrafted pastas, and the local catch of the day. They also have a surprisingly extensive kids menu.
La Cantina
La Cantina is the hotelâs lively poolside bar, and they serve salads, burgers, and Mexican food that you can enjoy at shaded tables on the pool deck. We shared a trio of tacos for lunch and they were very tasty! There are plenty of tables with umbrellas so you can enjoy being outside but out of the sun.
Silver Strand Exchange
Located off the lobby, Silver Strand Exchange is the place to go for a morning coffee, juice, smoothie, sandwich, or gelato. You can enjoy your food at one of the tables in the cafĂ©, take it out to the patio, or pack it to go for a day at the beach or on your roomâs private balcony.
Cays Lounge
Of all the restaurants at Loews Coronado Bay Resort, Cays Lounge ended up being our absolute favorite.
The reason is not the food â which was fantastic â but the gorgeous setting which extends off the back of the lobby to a terrace overlooking the bay. Throw in some comfy seating, craft cocktails, sweet views of the bay, and the glow of cozy firepits and youâve got the ideal spot to enjoy a casual bite.
If you want to sit inside thee is a bar and lounge. We stopped by for happy hour one afternoon and enjoyed their delightful drink specials.
There are also a number of TVs inside Cays Lounge for watching sports or just relaxing with a drink. But Iâll take the view of Coronado Bay Bridge sparkling on the water over watching TV any day.
Room Service
If you want to eat in and enjoy the views from your balcony, the hotel offers 24-hour room service.
Adventurous Eaters
Loews Coronado Bay Resort believes kids’ menus donât need to be elementary in flavor. Their new Adventurous Eaters programming focuses on giving children the opportunity to expand their palates and explore destinations through regional cuisine.
Now at Crown Landing and La Cantina, families can order signature menu items for kids with age-appropriate serving sizes. Beyond traditional kid fare, kids can enjoy:
- Steak Frites, featuring a Prime New York Steak, crispy truffle fries, demi-glace and herb butter at Crown Landing
- Rigatoni Bolognese, veal and pork, Burrata Parmigiana at Crown Landing
- Chile and berry-flavored wings at La Cantina
Final Thoughts: Loews Coronado Bay Resort
We had a wonderful stay at Loews Coronado Bay Resort. Though we are lucky enough to live nearby, a few days here felt like an island vacation.
One of things I love most about this resort is how it feels remote but really isnât. It is an enclave when you want to be removed from the world, yet just a short drive away from downtown San Diego or shuttle ride away from all the great things to do in Coronado with kids.
If beautiful views, great service, and tons of family-friendly activities and restaurants are high on your list, then this resort may be the perfect destination for your next California getaway.
